Dentistry

The dentistry is concerned with the detection, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the tooth, mouth and jaw area which is also called the stomatognathic system. Among the oral surgical operations of dentistry are the apicoectomy, tooth extractions and periodontal surgery, the latter area overlaps with the oral and maxillofacial surgery (MKG surgery).

In order to practice in Austria, Switzerland or Germany as a dentist, a university education must be completed and an exam has to be passed. Within four years of training, the dentist can specialize as specialist for orthodontics that treats malpositioned teeth and jaw anomalies as well as  dental specialist for oral surgery,  as a dentist for public health or as a dental specialist in periodontics.

The main areas of a dentist include the placement of (dental) implants, prosthetics which replaces tooth losses by using dental crowns or dental prostheses, as well as the prophylaxis, i.e. preventive dentistry, which reduces the risk of dental diseases through regular check-ups. In addition, there is the periodontology that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the periodontium.
