Medical specialty: Oral and maxillofacial surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) is a section of medicine linked to the medical field of surgery. Oral and maxillofacial surgery belongs to the operative areas of medicine.

In Germany, a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery has to study both human medicine and dental medicine. Furthermore, the physician must complete a surgical training period of 60 months. In addition, it is exactly defined which and how many surgeries an oral-and-maxillofacial-surgeon-to-be must have performed before he/she becomes a specialist.

Responsibilities of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon are functional and esthetic deformities, diseases and injuries of the jaw, the teeth, the oral cavity, palate, pharynx and the face.
